Livengood: UA has turned a corner in improving athletes' grades
Five UA sports reported graduation rates below the NCAA standard, but only one will receive a penalty.
The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate report, issued today, shows that the Arizona Wildcats’ baseball, football, women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams fell below a score of 925 — and therefore are subject to penalty by the NCAA.
However, only the men’s indoor track team was the only one docked a scholarship for next season. The football team finished with a score of 902, but was not subjected to penalty because the team demonstrated academic improvement.
The NCAA defines the score of 925 as roughly a 60 percent graduation rate.
UA athletic director Jim Livengood said “we feel like we’ve turned a corner” in improving the APR, and that “our projections for how we’ll rate at the end of next year are really solid.”
